About us
At Fundamental Hockey Academy (FHA), we believe hockey is far more than skating, shooting, and systems - it is a fast-paced mental game built on confidence, awareness, reaction, and decision-making under pressure. The players who separate themselves are not always the biggest or fastest; they are the players who think quicker, react faster, stay composed, and make the right decisions when the game speeds up.
That belief is at the core of everything we do. FHA combines skill development with cognitive sports training designed to challenge both the body and the mind. Through game-like situations, reaction-based drills, Hockey IQ concepts, and pressure-focused training, we help condition the brain to improve focus, reaction time, anticipation, and decision-making in real hockey situations. We want players to understand not only how to perform a skill, but why and when to use it during a game.
Founded by Coach Wes Marshburn, FHA is built on more than 30 years of on-ice experience, including competitive hockey through the U18 AA/AAA and Junior levels, years of youth coaching, and a lifelong passion for developing players. After serving in the U.S. Navy and stepping away from the game for a period of time, returning to the rink through coaching his own children reignited that passion and ultimately led to the creation of FHA.
Today, FHA focuses on building complete hockey players through skill development, Hockey IQ, skating, body contact, confidence, accountability, and mentorship. Our goal is to create passionate, hardworking players who compete with confidence, think the game at a higher level, and continue growing both on and off the ice. Every session is designed to push players outside their comfort zone, maximize puck touches and decision-making opportunities, and help them build the mindset needed to succeed when the pressure is highest.
